Annotate your WAGOLLs!
The main aim of WAGOLLs is to share good examples of writing with pupils so that they take and use them. Starting a unit of writing with an inspiring WAGOLL can grab pupils' attention but giving the children a chance to look deeper at the text allows children to study sentence structure, vocabulary and much more!
Getting children to annotate texts moves them towards this by sharing their knowledge, opinions and ideas. It could be as simple as finding different types of punctuation or identifying coordinating conjunctions and subordination. This is a Fantastic and great way to fit a bit of grammar education into the curriculum without it becoming too explicit.
Of course doing this as a part of a group or a class develops children's discussion skills and furthers their understanding of what it takes to create a great piece of writing. Sharing WAGOLLs on an interactive whiteboard can help with these discussions. However, a great advance in this concept is when children are allowed to evaluate WAGOLLs in real time with the class.
Taking a quick picture of a child's writing or a page in a book can instantly get all children discussing and sharing ideas! By annotating children's work or books, this can also motivate children to produce great writing in order for it to be shared and analysed.
By developing time to annotate and discuss texts you are instantly setting the success criteria for the child's own writing and also allowing your pupils to follow the same process of so many well know authors, who are influenced by other writers in order to create their own. Let your children become the authors of their own work.
