Develop self assessment skills!
Use a WAGOLL to develop self and peer assessment skills!
Remember, a WAGOLL is only a good one... not a perfect one! Get your children to mark the wagoll using the school marking scheme. This a great chance at the beginning of the year for children to recognise, familiarise and use the symbols or strategies you use as a teacher. Get them 'green for growthing' the WAGOLL and 'tickle pinking' areas in which they think the text can be improved with some highlighters.
Why not edit one of our texts and put a few mistakes in there to encourage setting targets and next steps!?
This activity could be done individually, in pairs on in groups on A3/2 paper! Get the children to finish off by writing a positive comment and a next step comment underneath. This way they develop their marking skills and become more able to mark and correct their own writing creating independent learners with outstanding learning behaviours!
This may be trick for KS1 children so why not differentiate it with more obvious mistakes targeted at the child's own challenges in writing. You could present the children with WAGOLL sentences instead to develop sentence structure learning. Perhaps they could split the sentences into a WAGOLL (good) or a WABOLL (bad) pile! The opportunities are endless but the skills are the foundations of learning how to write well!
