Chop up the WAGOLL!
Why not try cutting up the WAGOLL! Get the children to piece together the narrative or non-fiction text in the order they believe it should be in. This works on a variety of levels:
One - It simply gets your children engaged and encourages them to read the text and comprehend what the text is about so to decide its position. Much better than reading it aloud yourself and keeps all children focused.
Two - For non-fiction texts its furthers your pupils' understanding of text structure and layout because the text may include text boxes, headings and a whole variety of parts that make up the text. There may not be one answer and so may help create discussion about the best layout for the text with contrasting opinions!
Three - It furthers your child's understanding of paragraphing and flow. Clues in the previous paragraph may help order the text or previous topics may indicate what information needs to be shared next. THIS highlights flow and THE importance of moving smoothly from one paragraph to another. A high level concept for children!
Not only are you exposing the children to good examples of writing but you are developing problem solving and understanding of how texts are constructed and set out to create maximum interest which they can attempt to replicate. A win - win situation!
